COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New Mexico’s Amelia Mazza-Downie and Lokesh Sathyanathan have been named the 2023 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athletes of the Year, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

The honor is awarded to the best male and female student-athlete in the Conference following the conclusion of the outdoor season.

A native of Melbourne, Australia, Mazza-Downie earned first-team All-America honors in the 10,000-meter run and second-team All-America honors in the 5,000-meter run at the 2023 NCAA championship. Mazza-Downie coasted to a fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters, running a time of 32:51.90. The Lobo also crossed the finish line in ninth place in the 5,000-meter race, clocking a time of 15:56.35.

At the 2023 MW championship, Mazza-Downie collected her fourth overall Conference title after finishing the 5,000-meter race in 15:44.37.

On the men’s side, Sathyanathan earned All-America honors in the long jump after his debut at the 2023 NCAA championship. Sathyanathan placed 15th, earning second-team recognition, finishing his first season at New Mexico with a jump of 7.66 meters.

At the 2023 MW championship, Sathyanathan was named the 2023 MW Men’s Outstanding Performer of the Meet after winning the gold medal in the long jump with a meet-record jump of 8.02 meters.
